The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (MN CDE) has made the MN CDE available to the public. Annual Uniform Crime Reports are located at BCA Criminal Justice Reporting; the MN CDE is available at https://cde.state.mn.us/.
The system currently contains the first nine months of 2021 data for use-of-force, firearms discharge and agency participation. 2020 use-of-force data is also currently available in the system. The BCA will add much more data in the coming year.
Users will note some differences between MN CDE data and data at the FBI or local agency data.
1. MN CDE data and FBI data will not match: Data in the Minnesota Crime Data Explorer will not match the data in the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer. The BCA and FBI have different release schedules. The BCA publishes new data the last Monday of January, April, July and October.
2. MN CDE data and local agency use-of-force data may not match: The use-of-force data in MN CDE is data that meets the FBI’s criteria for its National Use of Force Data Collection. Your agency’s data may reflect additional incidents that don’t meet the FBI’s criteria.
We encourage you to check out the Minnesota Crime Data Explorer at https://cde.state.mn.us/. Please remember that agency participation data is now published for the first nine months of 2021.
Agencies are required to complete one of the following by the fifth of each month, or within 30 days of an incident. If the data was not submitted, it will be listed as “No Data Submitted” in the Agency Participation data in MN CDE.
