Who provides info?
The Office of Justice Programs updates two official notices of victim rights.
When is notice given?
A peace officer must give the first notice to the victim at first contact.
Initial notice includes:
- How to apply for financial help (not for property loss) after a violent crime.
- Right to ask police to keep your identity private in public records.
- Extra rights for domestic abuse victims (§629.341).
- Info on local victim support services.
- If charges are filed: right to be informed, participate, and request restitution.
- In homicide cases: info on survivor rights under estate laws.
After charges are filed:
The city or county attorney must send a follow-up notice with all victim rights.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INFORMATION
If you are the victim of domestic violence, you can ask the city or county attorney to file a criminal complaint. You also have the right to go to court and file a petition requesting an Order for Protection from domestic abuse.
The order could include the following:
1. An order restraining the abuser from further acts of abuse;
2. An order directing the abuser to leave your household;
3. An order preventing the abuser from entering your residence, school, business, place of employment.
4. An order awarding you or the other parent custody of or visitation with your minor children or
5. An order directing the abuser to pay support to you and the minor children is the abuser has a legal obligation to do so.
